As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, it's natural to want to take a break from work and enjoy the summer sun. School might be out and your patients are on vacation, but health care is year-round and you can't just close your practice because the teachers closed their classrooms.

There are a variety of ways you can remain productive and motivated during the summer months while still enjoying some well-earned rest and relaxation.

  • Schedule time for yourself: Just because you can't take a traditional summer vacation doesn't mean you can't schedule some time off. Whether it's a long weekend or just an afternoon, plan to take some time each week to recharge. You'll be a better doctor (and person) for it.
  • Get organized: Take some time to review your systems and make sure they're running as efficiently as possible. A little bit of summertime planning can go a long way in making the rest of the year run smoothly.
  • Take advantage of slow times: Use slower periods at your practice to catch up on charting, return phone calls, or engage in other tasks that you typically don't have time for.
  • Make the most of your days: When you are seeing patients, make sure to maximize your time with each one.
  • Learn new things: YES! School is out but you can still learn. Pick up an industry publication and read about a recent study, better familiarize yourself with your healthcare solutions such as your telemedicine platform, or EHR solution, or get involved with an organization that aligns with the goals of your practice.
  • Plan fun activities for yourself and your staff: Take a break from work to enjoy the summer weather with your staff. Plan a picnic, go to the beach, or just have a casual lunch outside. These types of activities can help boost morale and keep everyone motivated.
  • Get ahead: When school starts again, your downtime will cease to exist so catch up on all the things you've been meaning to do. Whether it's painting your office, updating your website, or writing that blog you've always wanted to write, now is the time to get it done.

By following these tips, you can have a productive and enjoyable summer while still providing quality care for your patients.
